In this paper, a cell level study of an ATM switch based on a three-stage Clos interconnection network under bursty Interrupted Bernoulli Processes is presented. Different traffic patterns are considered : in the first one, cells of a given burst are assumed to be randomly directed to the different output ports of the switch. In the second one, cells of a given burst are assumed to belong to the same Virtual Channel and at most one burst can be directed to a given output port of the switch. This traffic type is usually named SSSD (Single Source to Single Destination). In the last one, a SSSD high traffic embedded in a uniform traffic is considered. Cells of a given burst are supposed to be routed independently. Consequently, a resequencing mechanism has to be implemented. Approximate analytical models of the switch are proposed, they are validated by discrete event simulations for the parameter values for which simulations can be run. Performance of the resequencer is estimated by simulations. It is shown that such interconnection networks lead to good performance results even with small buffers under those different traffic patterns.

An Analytical Model and Performance Analysis of Shared Buffer ATM Switches under Non-uniform Traffic
For uniform traffic, ATM switches employing shared buffering have lower cell loss probability and better buffer utilization than other buffering strategies. However, the performance of shared-buffer switches degrades dramatically under non-uniform traffic. Traffic nonuniformity is inherent in telecommunications, and is likely to be present in ATM networks because of the different characteristic...
An accurate performance model of shared buffer ATM switches under hot spot traffic
Asynchronous transfer mode (ATM) switches based on shared buffering are known to have better performance and buffer utilization than input or output queued switches. Shared buffer switches do not suffer from head of line blocking which is a problem in simple input buffering. Shared buffer switches have previously been studied under uniform and unbalanced traffic patterns. However, due to the co...
1 - The Main Questions to be Asked in order to Characterize an ATM Switch Performance Model
Performance of ATM networks will depend on switch performance and architecture. In this paper a set of eleven questions is presented in order to be able to study the performance. It is necessary to clearly identify the main characteristics of the switch architecture and the traffic that are considered. They concern the level of study, the placement of the memory, the monopath or multipath archi...
The Folded Hypercube ATM Switches
Over the past few years, many high performance asynchronous transfer mode (ATM) switches have been proposed. The majority of these switches have high performance but also high hardware complexity. Therefore, there is a need for switch designs with low complexity and high performance. This research proposes three new ATM switches based on the folded hypercube network (FHC). The performance of th...
Improving the Performance of Shared-buffer Multistage ATM Swiches under Bursty Traffic using Backpressure and Pushout
In multistage interconnection networks used for switching in ATM, low level flow control mechanisms such as backpressure are used to regulate the flow of cells between stages to prevent cells from being lost due to buffer overflow. This is accomplished by signalling the upstream neighbour granting permission to send a cell where there is free buffer space for the cell to be received in the swit...
